C-section mommies - stitches that don't dissolve??

I had my c-section on Jan. 7th (3.5 wks ago). I can still see one loop of stich at the very end of my incision. DH says this is where they tie it off. It is now raised and red just in this spot. There is no oozing or anything crusty and no fever. Has anyone had this happen and should I wait or go see a doctor tomorrow? TIA

Re: C-section mommies - stitches that don't dissolve??

  • I did with my first. It was actually an internal stitch that had work it's way up thru the skin. My OB just clipped it off and then the rest absorbed into my body, no problems. They have to start and stop the internal stitching with a larger knot (I can actually still feel the knot under my skin with my 2nd c-section that was 2 weeks ago) and that knot takes longer to dissolve.

Hope that helps! I would call your OB just to let him/her know.

  • I was so paranoid about doing anything to my incision.  I had a couple of bumps that I was convinced was scabbing but I wasn't about to touch it to find out.  Flash forward to my six week appointment when my doctor gave me a funny look and said "I pulled a couple pieces of undissolved suture out of your incision."  I guess I should have removed them, they seemed to be only hanging on by a thread but I was being so gentle around the area they didn't move.  Apparently, the pieces that don't get tucked into your skin won't dissolve and this is completely normal.  I say that if it isn't oozing and isn't painful, give it a little more time.  I bet it is ok.

Word for word exactly my experience with my first and second -sections 18 months apart.

  • I had one on the end of my incision and my OB saw it at my 2wk appt and said I could let it work it's way out or take a cuticle scissor and clip it off. A couple weeks later it worked its way out and was fine.
